English Premier League

The English Premier League was founded in 1992/93. It has since grown in stature and is considered one of the best if not the best football league in the world. How it Started

Before delving into the status of the Premier League, it is essential to have an idea of where it all started. League football in England started in 1888, under the leadership of then Aston Villa chairperson William McGregor. As the popularity of the game increased, they found it fit to add other divisions – Second Division, Third Division North, and Third Division South.

Major structural/administrative developments characterised the first 104 years. Everything, however, changed in 1991/92, when all teams in the league unanimously agreed to resign and join a newly set up league, the English Premier League. The League Today

The Premier league has 20 teams. Each team plays the others twice every season – home and away. So each team in the league plays a total of 38 games each season. The English football season runs from May to August.

The league follows the first-past-the-post system. This essentially means that the team that manages to get the most points wins the League. Thus, once a team accumulates enough points that it cannot be caught up by the team in second place, they are declared champions. In some cases, teams might have to wait until the last day to be declared champions.

What happens if two teams finish the league with similar points? The FA then considers the difference between the goals scored and those conceded – known as the goal difference. If that is not enough to separate them, they look at the total number of goals scored, and if this fails, they resort to the head-to-head record or how the teams compare based on the matches they played against each other.

On the flip side, the teams that finish in the last three positions are relegated to the EFL championship. The best three in Championship are expected to take up the three position left by the relegated teams.
